Let's Talk About Palliative Care and Parkinson's Disease

People with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and their care partners are always searching for ways to make their lives easier, healthier and fuller. Using the principles of palliative care to enhance PD-specific care is one way to do that.

Palliative care is a medical approach for those with complex illnesses, in which the focus is on maximizing quality of life. This approach can be applied at any stage of the disease, even at the time of diagnosis. Many people with PD have experienced this type of approach from their physicians, often to a limited degree, when a treatment or therapy is added to improve quality of life.

However, these small steps are often not enough and a change in the practice of PD medicine is slowly underway, with the goal of providing comprehensive and consistent palliative care throughout the disease course. In order to provide this level of care, some formal palliative care programs for PD have been developed, but more such programs are needed across the country.

Parkinson's in the News:

January

People with Parkinson’s disease spent 44% less time walking during Covid-19 lockdowns

Data from a mobility monitoring app for people with Parkinson’s disease has highlighted a substantial decrease in exercise during lockdowns – with mean daily activity falling by 44%.

The app, developed by Portuguese company Kinetikos, aims to support daily exercise by allowing people with Parkinson’s to track their activity in unsupervised, non-clinical settings. Of the 16 people included in the study, no significant worsening in mobility was found – and three participants who moved away from urban areas during the study period increased their walking activity by 99%.

A study from Finland reveals that people with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SCD) have a higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease later in life.

In combined regional and national approaches to the study, researchers analysed data from more than 25,000 people with Parkinson’s disease. The results showed that a greater proportion of people with Parkinson’s were previously diagnosed with SCD than those without Parkinson’s disease.

The researchers concluded that the increased risk of Parkinson’s in people with SCD could be linked to the effects of medications common in SCD treatments, or to the increased vulnerability of the dopamine system in SCD.

Dr. Vanessa Hinson, Director of the Parkinson’s Foundation Center

of Excellence at MUSC, recently spoke to the attendees at a support

group meeting about two ongoing trials in the Charleston area that require minimal or no visit to a medical facility.

The TOPAZ Study is a fracture prevention trial where the medication

will be administered during a one-time, 45-minute visit to your home.

The ROPAD trial is an observational (no treatment) genetic study conducted during a single visit to the “little green house”, the MUSC Movement Disorders research site away from the hospital. These are two important trials and offer two ways you can help to further

our knowledge of PD, with easy participation. Please contact Tim at sheehant@musc.edu for more information.

You do not have to be an MUSC patient to participate!
