Low Levels of Vitamin B6 and B12 Linked to Patients’ Nerve Damage |
|
Neuropathy, or nerve damage, was linked to abnormally low levels of the vitamins B6 and B12 in three people with Parkinson’s disease, according to a case report.
“All patients were consecutively identified within one year at a single institution,” the researchers wrote, which suggests that neuropathy associated with low levels of these vitamins “may be an unrecognized entity.” As such, the team stressed the importance of measuring levels of vitamins B6 and B12 when neuropathy is suspected.
“Monitoring B6 and B12 levels even if neuropathy symptoms are not present should also be considered,” the researchers added. “Timely recognition and treatment of both vitamin deficiencies could lead to improved outcomes in these patients.”

Deep brain stimulation is an established treatment for people with Parkinson’s disease, but industry experts think that its fast evolution has led to an information gap. This means that those who may benefit from the technology may not be aware of all the latest innovations – and how these new developments in the field could be of benefit to themselves, friends or family members.
DBS treatment involves the placement of two electrodes into the brain, which then deliver electrical impulses through a connected stimulator. Targeting specific regions of the brain, the impulses can improve Parkinson’s symptoms by blocking certain signals and helping to improve uncontrolled muscle movements.
Professor Jens Volkmann, who heads a team at the University of Würzburg, Germany, says: “The impact of DBS is all about location”. That’s why, when it comes to placing these electrodes, clear visualization of the tech’s inner workings could offer a step forward in Parkinson’s treatment.

Web-Based Speech Tool May Help ID Parkinson’s in Real World |
|
A new tool that analyzes speech using real-world, web-based recordings — participants are recorded via a webcam and a microphone connected to a personal computer or laptop — identified Parkinson’s disease patients with 74% accuracy, a study demonstrated.
Moreover, this speech tool — called Parkinson’s Analysis with Remote Kinetic-tasks, or PARK — performed equally well when sex and age were assessed separately, making it a useful diagnostic test for both men and women, of all ages, the study found. Most importantly, according to the researchers, more than 90% of the participants were tested at home, in situations that “contain real-world variability.”
“Using this tool, we can collect data from almost anyone anywhere with an audio-enabled device and help the participants screen for [Parkinson’s disease] remotely, contributing to equity and access in neurological care,” the scientists wrote.

"Well, ‘myself’ was a kid that grew up just outside New York City and went off to college in Western Massachusetts, US. I always wanted to be a lawyer – I was born to be a lawyer. I used to watch the drama series ‘Perry Mason’ and act out the opening arguments.
I spent several magical years among the ivy-covered buildings at Cornell Law School in the US. I had a great experience in law school. Most people don’t, but I did. After that I worked with a company for 10 years, learning how to be a lawyer and passing three different bar exams. Then, five years after I took a job with a steel company as a general counsel, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
I was able to work for another seven years before Parkinson’s, fatigue and other non-motor issues caught up – and I decided to do something else."

| | The goal of the study is to understand how restrictions from COVID-19 effected physical activity levels in those with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Physical activity has been known to improve many symptoms in patients with PD. In this study, you will participate in one (1) virtual meeting. In total, this study will require around 30-45 minutes of your time. You will be asked to answer surveys about your current physical activity level, cognitive abilities, and balance confidence. Following the questionnaires, you will be asked questions about how COVID 19 has affected your ability to participate in physical activity.
If you have any concerns about the study, you can contact: PI: Jared W. Skinner at 828-262-2512 or skinnerjw@appstate.edu. |

If you have a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease (PD), you are invited to participate in a research study. Sydney Richards, a Master’s student in the Genetic Counseling Training Program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is conducting a new research study to better understand the experience of individuals with Parkinson’s disease with genetic testing. We need your help and want to hear about your experience and opinions! People who have and have not had genetic testing are encouraged to take part! The study includes just a short, online survey that should only take about 15 minutes to complete. All answers are anonymous. This study is voluntary, and your decision to participate will not affect your medical care. If you are interested in learning more about this study, please use the link below by November 16th, 2021.
