Greetings Parkinson Association of the Carolinas (PAC)

Friends,

PAC’s office and resource telephone line will be

closed July 3rd through the 6th

in observance of Independence Day.

We will resume operations July 7th.

At this time, we do not have a date when visitors will be allowed into

the PAC office nor when community-based programs will resume.

Our number one priority is keeping you, the members of our community, safe.

We will continue to offer current  virtual programming

including some new opportunities in July.

We look forward to serving you this summer!

With gratitude, Your Parkinson Association of the Carolinas Team

Research and Volunteer Opportunities!

MUSC Research Opportunity

Dr. Vanessa Hinson, Director of the Parkinson’s Foundation Center

of Excellence at MUSC, recently spoke to the attendees at a support

group meeting about two ongoing trials in the Charleston area that require

minimal or no visit to a medical facility.

The TOPAZ Study is a fracture prevention trial where the medication

will be administered during a one-time, 45-minute visit to your home.

The ROPAD trial is an observational (no treatment) genetic study conducted

during a single visit to the “little green house”, the MUSC Movement

Disorders research site away from the hospital.

These are two important trials and offer two ways you can help to further

our knowledge of PD, with easy participation.

Please contact Tim at sheehant@musc.edu for more information.

You do not have to be an MUSC patient to participate!

Duke University Research Opportunity

Duke is currently enrolling PD carepartners into a distance

education phase of their Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and PD study,

which will run on Tuesdays 2:00-3:30PM, July 14 until September 1

Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) is a technique proven to reduce

stress by helping you live in the moment. Last year Duke ran a study of MBSR

for people with PD and PD care-partners, which showed encouraging

improvements to participants’ stress levels. The next phase of this study,

a distance education offering of MBSR, has just begun. We hope to

determine if distance education courses also improve stress and will

reduce barriers to participation by allowing people to take part anywhere

they have an internet connection or a phone line.
