I have been teaching Yoga for Parkinson’s through the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas since 2013.
During this time, I’ve had an opportunity to teach some of the most incredible people I’ve met in my lifetime. Having witnessed the strength and courage of my students has motivated me to work harder at learning how yoga and overall movement can help those with Parkinson’s better manage their symptoms and cope with many of the concerns associated with this condition.
These experiences have made me hopeful that with more research and support within individual communities, those with Parkinson’s can be afforded options to help improve their quality of life. Movement such as yoga, dance and strengthening exercises can help do this.
Our Charlotte yoga class increased from one in 2013 to seven classes at 4 different locations in 2020. We’ve also started offering 3-4 classes per week virtually. All of these classes are offered free to our Parkinson’s community.
For reasons noted and so many others not mentioned, I ask you to consider making a donation to support this year’s MoveIt! Walk Charlotte.
In the meantime, “Look around you, ‘take a deep breath in and a slow breath out’, count your blessings and smile.
